Hip
Resurfacing Surgery needs no introduction. It is one of the
greatest advances that Science has ever seen. It has changed
the lives of people completely.
Hip Resurfacing and Dr Ameet Pispati have come a long way. Dr Ameet Pispati
was trained in this surgery in Birmingham itself, and has been practising
it since as early as 1995.
Our aim is to help people with hip arthritis in every possible way. We
would like you to feel free to e-mail us your doubts and worries and
we will try and guide you further through the exciting possibilities
available to you today.
Landmark
INNOVATION in Hip Joint arthritis treatment
Hip Resurfacing surgery – a far superior
alternative to Hip Replacement!
Arthritis
of the hip joint is a common problem in India and the Western
world. It occurs due to damage to the hip joint from various
conditions such as Primary Osteoarthritis, Avascular Necrosis
(death of bone due to lack of blood supply), Trauma or Injury
(previous hip fractures), Infection, Rheumatoid arthritis,
Ankylosing Spondylitis and other diseases. It causes severe
pain, stiffness, deformity, decreased mobility and severe
disability. In India, hip joint arthritis affects even the
younger population who are barely 20 or 30 years of age.
This can lead to disruption of family and social life, inability
to work for a living and difficulty in moving about.
Hip
arthritis is treated with Total Hip Replacement Surgery when
the symptoms or the arthritis cannot be controlled with medications.
Hip replacements are successful procedures.
A
striking advance has been made in the field of surgery for
Hip Arthritis. “Don’t get a Hip Replacement,
just reline or resurface your arthritic hip!” This
is what hundreds of satisfied Hip resurfacing patients are
now urging other arthritis patients to do.
What
do you do if you need a new hip but you cannot face the daunting
prospect of a conventional total hip replacement (THR)? The
answer lies in a revolutionary surgery to reline the arthritic
hip joint called Hip Resurfacing (BHR or ASR). A similar
procedure can also be done on the Shoulder.
Patients
who have undergone this pioneering Hip Resurfacing operation
are able to walk as much as 5 miles a day, as early as 6
weeks after the operation. They can jog, swim, dance, run
and even play high-impact sports, and the resurfaced hip
does not dislocate or slip out of joint! Patients are also
able to sit cross-legged or squat on the floor and can even
use an Indian toilet after this surgery.
Conventional
hip replacement (Total Hip Replacement or THR) is an excellent
procedure in elderly or sedentary people, but it cannot restore
the mobility desired by younger and middle aged patients.
Also, it can sometimes dislocate or slip out of joint, loosen
faster in younger people (and vital bone is lost as the Total
Hip Replacement loosens) and patients are often restricted
in terms of their lifestyle and mobility. For example, patients
who have had conventional hip replacement are not allowed
to squat, are not allowed to bend and pick something up from
the floor, and are not allowed to cross their legs. All this,
however, is usually possible to do after Hip Resurfacing.
The
actual procedure is a surgery to the hip joint that is much
less invasive than conventional Hip Replacement. The area
of arthritis is cleaned and shaved out and 2 highly specialised
metal pieces (called ‘components’ or ‘prosthesis’)
are used - one fixed over the ball of the femur bone, and
the other fixed into the pelvic socket called acetabulum.
This preserves the body's vital bone (unlike in a traditional
hip replacement) where the body's vital bone is lost. It
takes about one and a half hours to do this procedure (about
the same time as a hip replacement). The hospital stay is
only about 5 to 7 days. Patients can walk within 2 days of
the surgery. The marginal increase in cost is more than offset
by the multiple benefits given to the patient.
This
Hip Resurfacing procedure was pioneered by one of the world’s
leading hip surgeons Dr Derek McMinn in Birmingham, U.K.
and has given a fresh breath of life to hundreds of people
in several parts of the world. Dr Ameet Pispati was one of
the earliest from Asia to learn this procedure in Birmingham.
Dr Ameet Pispati was the 1st person in Asia to perform the
ASR (Articular Surface Replacement) Hip Resurfacing procedure.
This was done at the Jaslok Hospital, Mumbai, India
